GOODWILL HUNTING No.1: PARIS PAINTING

parispaintingbeforeafter parispaintingsupplies1 parispainting1

Goodwill Hunting is a series of posts I'll be doing where I share what I hunted down at my local Goodwill. When I look around my room and around the house there are quite a few unique pieces that I've found at the Goodwill. It's always either hit or miss when shopping there. Somedays I'll find something really cool and most times I'll walk in and out with nothing in hand. But when you do find those pieces that were once someone else's trash but now your treasures, you realize that the thrill really is in the hunt.

One of my more recent finds is this beautiful painting of Paris. Apparently someone named Mark  (smart guy, he signed his work) seemed to be one talented guy! Fortunately for me his painting was tossed out. Maybe by an ex-lover? an old friend? or maybe he was kinda over it himself and decided maybe he'd donate it, cause surely someone else would appreciate it. So thanks Mark! whoever you are, it looks perfect on my wall.

As with most things you find at the Goodwill they need a bit of sprucing up. So the only thing that needed to change was the color of the frame. It is a pretty frame in and of itself but the orange gold was a little to much for my taste. So it had to go! Luckily, it was nothing that a bit of champagne metallic paint couldn't fix. I decided to keep with the metallic finish because I love metallic touches throughout a room and I think the metallic frame contrasts nicely with the matte finish of the painting. Also, changing it to more of a subtle color really allows the colors in the painting to pop. I'm so happy with how it turned out.

Now for some quick tips on Goodwill Hunting...

Goodwill Tip #1 If a painting, picture or frame caught your eye, don't leave it because you don't like the color or the style of the frame. It's always an easy fix you can make with a new frame or a new paint color.

Goodwill Tip #2  Try to single out things and look at them with a bit of a creative eye. Have fun with altering things to suit your taste and style.

Goodwill Tip #3 If you love something don't leave it because chances are when you come back it won't be there. Trust me on this one.

Goodwill Tip #4 If you have dust allergies avoid the area at all costs, or suck it up, or where a dust mask...your choice.

WEST ELM WISHLIST

 photo 42041c27-8b98-416b-b312-7ae2d33ee089_zps6ab43049.jpg

I've spent all this week cooped up at home and in bed in pajamas, a hoodie and fuzzy socks. I caught a cold this past weekend and it's been full force ever since. My days have consisted of catching up on reality tv, sleeping, eating soup, drinking yellow gatorade and sneezing till my head hurts. So besides trying to catch up on required readings from classes I've missed, I've spent most of my time redesigning this blog and browsing various home decor shops online.

It seems that with every seasonal change we come upon I always get this urge to redecorate. Last time I got this inspiration to redecorate was back in January and I ended up painting the walls and changing everything to get the look I wanted. My room is always in a constant state of change. I love to move things around, put things away, buy new items - basically I get bored very quickly. and just recently over the past couple of months I've started to really love how everything has come together. It takes time to get everything to feel and look right. I've always had the mindset that it's better to buy items gradually over time, because when I do this I always end up with more unique pieces and with a bedroom that really represents who I am and what I like. The thrill is in the hunt really.

That said, I've been looking for a new desk for a while now and I finally came across this industrial style desk from West Elm. It's just perfect. So finding that led me to these other things that I'd also love to see in my room someday. I'm actually a big believer that you don't have to spend a lot to make a room look nice. Which is why most of my things come from Tj Maxx, Home Goods, Ikea, World Market, Goodwill - and in that order and sometimes on sale. But I'm also thinking ahead and I think investing in good design is a must. Especially when it comes to big furniture pieces. So if I slowly acquire this stuff now I get to take it all with me when I move out - hopefully into a place with a huge exposed brick wall, cause I've always loved that.

NAILS | Essie Go Ginza

Six hand cramps later and I finally got the shot! So my cousin who I've turned into a mini make-up, Essie obsessed lover, was actually the one who introduced me to this color. Each time we go to each others houses we rummage through our nail polish stash to see which latest Essie's we've picked out. That time at her house I decided to paint on Essie's Go Ginza, one of her favorites. The whole -I can't stop staring at my nails- thing happend and so I decided to get one for myself.

This Essie is coming to us from the Spring 2013 collection. Its a bright pastel, pale purple and my eyes also pick up a tinge of pink in it. It's a true stunner that is great for, yup you guessed it spring and summer!

NEW BUYS | Anthropologie

I recently read a post from Lily Pebbles on some new candles she purchased at Anthropologie. I hadn't been since Christmas so I made a mental note to stop in soon. It is one of my favorite stores to visit, simply because it always an inspiring experience. Unfortunately, their prices are extortionately high so I usually find myself roaming around and then leaving empty handed. Unless, I score some awesome deal in the sale (rare) or the home section has something that is reasonably priced. This time I came across this monogrammed mug for $6.00 and this gorgeous printed bowl for $10.00. I love finding cute ways to display different items in my room, so I knew I would find the perfect use for these. Alas, I did! and I happily walked out with a simple little cream shopping bag in hand.
