San Francisco is impressive. I had visited once before when I was about ten but I don't remember much about it. Driving into the big bay city was incredibly exciting for me. Even now I can't wrap my head around how they constructed a city amongst all the hills. I mean Austin has hundreds of homes built on hills, but this is different. I guess the proximity of the houses to each other was the most surprising. They are all attached to each other and in rows. colorfully painted homes with flat top roof cascading down the hills in contrast to the grey sky was such an amazing sight.
After driving through the city for a while, we made our first stop to see the Painted Ladies. To be honest I don't know why these are so famous but I felt it was our obligatory duty as tourists to stop for a few photos. Then right around the corner my 90's childhood dreams came true when we saw the full house home. It's tiny.
We then drove to Haight-Asbury area where all the hippies used to frolic around in the late 60's and 70's. My brother really wanted to go to Amoeba so we shopped in there for a while, bought a few things and then walked around the Haight for a bit. Funky shops, interesting people - it was a good time.
San Francisco seems to be an easy big city to navigate because although it is large by population the city isn't as large as I expected, but I liked it even more for this reason. It meant we got to cover a lot of ground during our short stay. Although we saw a lot I didn't get to know San Francisco as well as I would have liked, but that of course means that I will have to go back for further exploration. Next time I'll make my way around the city by going to good coffee shops and cafes. Perhaps spend less time at all the tourist traps, (ahem fisherman's warf).
Next up I'll share all the other typical touristy things we got up too while in San Fran.
